2017 Beringer Borrow Pit Vineyard Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon

Original price was: £170.00.Current price is: £70.00.

From the storied oak-shaded hills of Oakville comes this commanding Cabernet Sauvignon—an exquisitely crafted wine that balances power with finesse. Aged in 100% new French oak, it is a single-vineyard expression of Beringer’s ‘Borrow Pit’ site that showcases the terroir’s dramatic range: intense heat in the day, fog-cooled mornings, crisp diurnal swings that preserve freshness and acidity.

Beringer Bottle and Glass

TASTING PROFILE

Appearance: Deep, pitch-purple; in the glass it shows long-lasting “legs” that hint at serious extract and concentration.

Aroma: Blackberries and cherries take center stage, followed by richer, more complex notes of French-roasted coffee, vanilla, and subtle cocoa. There’s also a whisper of tobacco, earth (loam), and even a flash of menthol through the finish.

Palate: Full-bodied and structured, with cassis and blackberry fruits interweaving with creamy vanilla and smoky oak. Firm tannins give backbone, supported by balanced acidity that keeps the richness from becoming cloying.

Finish: Long and powerful — the fruit carries through, with lingering hints of tobacco, cocoa, and those refined oak tannins. The gentler acidity ensures a finish that’s bold, yet elegant.

VINTAGE NOTES

2017 in Oakville was marked by relatively lower yields, abundant winter rainfall, and some heat spikes near harvest. The cooling weather afterward preserved flavor, ripeness, and acidity in the grapes.

This wine is accessible now for those who enjoy richer, oak-inflected Cabernets — but it also has ageing potential. Best between 2021–2030, it will reward those who give it time to develop more layers.

About brand
Beringer is known for establishing many 'firsts' as leaders in the wine industry. They were one of the first gravity fed facilities and among the first to operate using hand-dug caves and cellars. We were the first to give public tours in 1934, starting a Napa Valley hospitality tradition. They are the first and only winery to have both a red and a white wine named #1 Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator Magazine. The Beringer estate provides a unique glimpse into Napa Valley's past. Graced with stately 19th century architecture and verdant gardens, Beringer is not only one of the most beautiful properties in California's wine country, but as the longest continuously operating winery in Napa, it's also one of the most historic.
Frederick Beringer's former residence "The Rhinehouse"  is now the center piece of the expansive Beringer property. Exhibiting the fine, detailed craftsmanship of the period, the Rhine House has beautiful exterior stonework, stained-glass windows and interior wood paneling. When building his 17-room mansion, Frederick wanted to mimic the Beringer family's impressive German home at Mainz-on-the-Rhine. Built at a cost of about $28,000 (with the 40 panels of stained glass accounting for $6,000) the Rhine House is a classic example of ornate Victorian architecture with its many gables, turrets and ornaments. Margo Van Staaveren began her winemaking career at Beringer and brings more than 45 harvests of experience to the role. She has worked with the brand for many years, helping shape some of its most acclaimed wines as part of her leadership across the North Coast portfolio. Known for her refined blending style and deep vineyard knowledge, Margo crafts expressive, age-worthy wines that reflect both tradition and innovation. Her thoughtful, collaborative approach continues to guide Beringer’s winemaking today. “Beringer has long held a special place in my heart—not only as one of Napa’s most historic estates, but as a benchmark for excellence in California winemaking.”
